Harbhajan helps India create history in Hamilton

Harbhajan Singh took six wickets for 63 runs as India beat New Zealand by 10 wickets in the first Test on Saturday, posting its first Test win in New Zealand in 33 years to lead the three-match series 1-0.

India led by 241 runs after its first innings when it reached 520 in reply to New Zealand's 279, then dismissed the hosts for for 279 in its second innings to leave itself needing just 39 runs for victory on the fourth day.

Gautam Gambhir scored 30 and Rahul Dravid made 8 as India reached its winning target in just 5.2 overs. Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 160 in India's first innings, was named man of the match.

New Zealand resumed its second innings Saturday at 75-3, trailing India by 161 runs and slumped in the face of Harbhajan's 23rd five-wicket Test haul to 199-8.

A 76-run, 10th-wicket partnership between Brendon McCullum, who top-scored with 84, and Iain O'Brien, who reached his best Tests score of 14, allowed New Zealand to avoid an innings defeat.

McCullum was the last man out and India was untroubled in reaching its winning target minutes ahead of the scheduled stumps time.

Harbhajan hastened New Zealand's decline, taking five of the seven wickets to fall Saturday, including those of Daniel Flynn for 67, Jesse Ryder for 21 and Daniel Vettori for 21, eliminating the main obstacles to India's victory.

Flynn's posted his third Test half-century and was the only New Zealand batsman early in the day to show the discipline and application necessary to save the match. When he was dismissed in the second session with New Zealand at 161-7, the match was lost.

McCullum produced some pugnacious late resistance and found a stoic partner in O'Brien, who stuck at the crease for an hour and 40 minutes, slowing India's bid for victory. He helped New Zealand erase India's first-innings lead and made it necessary for the tourists to bat again to seal their win.

McCullum batted for almost three hours and hit 11 fours in an innings which partly relieved New Zealand's embarrassment at a comprehensive defeat.

"It's pretty disappointing," McCullum said. "Playing at home you set high standards for yourself and we didn't play to those standards.

"We pride ourselves on our fight and scrapping and I don't think we fought and scrapped hard enough in this Test."

India held a vice-like grip on the Test from the first day when, after winning the toss and making the unexpected decision to bowl first, it reduced New Zealand to 60-6 before lunch.

New Zealand captain Vettori (118) made his third test century and Ryder (102) his first in a small comeback, but New Zealand's first-innings total of 279 was never enough to pressure India.

Tendulkar's magnificent innings — his 42nd Test century and his 18th Test innings in excess of 150 — gave India a commanding first-innings lead. Gambhir, who made 72, Rahul Dravid, who made 66, and Zaheer Khan, who added 51, contributed to that advantage.

Harbhajan was seen as the greatest threat to New Zealand's batsman on what had become a good batting pitch and his outstanding effort on Saturday clinched a comprehensive win.

The second Test starts in Napier on Thursday.

Firaaq (2009) Movie Review

Starring: Naseeruddin Shah, Sanjay Suri, Deepti Naval, Shahana Goswami, Tisca Chopra and Paresh Rawal

Director: Nandita Das

The film takes place over a 24 hour period and a month after the infamous Godhra incident which were followed by a horrific communal carnage in the state of Gujarat. It peeks into multiple characters amongst such as Aarti (Deepti Naval), a housewife who is silently haunted by the image of a Muslim woman begging for sanctuary. Another is Khan Saheb (Naseer), a renowned musician who lives in a Hindu area, and teaches classical music. He cannot understand the destruction of his familiar world, and naively assumes that it is possible for the two communities to live together. There is also Muneera (Shahana), who hides with friends during the violence, and returns to her home to find it burned to the ground. And there is Sameer (Suri), a young, dashing, wealthy Muslim married to a Hindu Anuradha (Tisca), who is torn between the dilemma of staying in Ahmedabad or leaving for another city where he and his wife might be safer. Lastly, there are the stories of other hapless Muslims, who make incompetent plots to take revenge.

Despite choosing such a heavy subject in her directorial debut film, actress Nandita Das has succeeded in handling it with utmost sensitivity and technical finesse. With an able technical support from India’s finest technicians such as cameraman Ravi K. Chandran (Ghajini, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi) and editor Sreekar Prasad (Guru, Yuva) Nandita has managed to assemble and ensemble cast of talented actors which take the film to a completely different level. The stories are not exactly interwoven but do manage to strike a chord. Firaaq’s strength lies in focusing on ordinary Hindus and Muslims whose lives were affected by the riots. Nandita barely resorts to showing graphic violence on screen and it’s fear, anger and anxiety are all understated.

Paresh Rawal in a serious role after a long time is a treat to watch. Sanjay Suri carries one of his most difficult roles with aplomb. Tisca playing his wife lends able support. Shahana Goswami post Rock On delivers yet another award worthy performance. But it is Naseeruddin Shah and Deepti Naval making a comeback on screen after a long gap whose performances linger on your mind long after the film is over.

Firaaq is not meant for the faint hearted or those seeking two hours of time pass. It shows us the uncomfortable truths and painful reality in which the people of our country must live, as they set about repairing the destroyed trust between two communities.

Saravana Bhavan founder gets life for murder

Founder of the popular Saravana Bhavan hotel chain P. Rajagopal was today sentenced to life in a murder case by the Madras High Court that enhanced his 10-year rigorous imprisonment awarded by a trial court. The verdict was announced by a division bench comprising Justices P.K. Mishra and R. Banumathi, who convicted Rajagopal and six others for the 2001 murder. The court also increased his conviction from culpable homicide not amounting to murder, to culpable homicide amounting to murder.

Rajagopal, 59, who had founded the Saravana Bhavan chain of hotels worldwide in 1981, had been found guilty of murdering an employee Prince Shantakumar in 2001. A fast track court had in 2004 sentenced him to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and fined him Rs.5.5 million.

Rajagopal had also been accused of sexually harassing Shantakumar's widow, Jeevajothi, and the daughter of another employee Ramaswamy.

Of the fine, Rs.5 million was to be handed over to Jeevajothi, the court had ruled.

Rajagopal, who was rearrested for violating bail conditions during his trial after allegedly attempting to threaten Jeevajothi, had appealed to the high court.

The Saravana Bhavan chain of hotels and restaurants, popular for their range of idlis, dosas and the like, gained further notoriety in November 2008 after Rajagopal's son P. Shiva Kumar was arrested on a charge of forging documents to smuggle people into the US.

The charges were based on the findings of the US consulate. The arrest also resulted in the cancellation of several lucrative contracts of the hotel chain to supply food to American diplomatic missions.

According to the hotel group's website, its outlets are located "across 22 outlets in South India, three in the North and seven countries with 22 outlets across the globe". (IANS)

Natasha Richardson brain dead after ski accident

Actress Natasha Richardson was reported to be brain dead late Tuesday after a seemingly innocuous fall while skiing on a bunny slope at the Mont Tremblant resort in Canada.

Richardson's family declined to comment on her condition and speculation swirled as to her condition.

The New York Post quoted friends of the family as saying that the British-born actress, 45, was being transported from a Montreal hospital to New York so that her family and friends could say goodbye before she is taken off life support. Fox news and E! Online reported similar stories.

A reporter for the Toronto Star saw Richardson being taken from the hospital on an intensive care bed, heavily wrapped in blankets and with tubes covering her face. She was flown back to New York on a private jet.

According to a spokesperson for the ski resort, Richardson fell during a private lesson Monday on a beginners' slope while not wearing a helmet. She managed to walk back to her room and was laughing and joking. But she was taken to hospital an hour later when she started having headaches.

"She did not show any visible sign of injury, but the ski patrol followed strict procedures and brought her back to the bottom of the slope and insisted she should see a doctor," said a statement from the resort, which is some 125 km north-west of Montreal.

Richardson is a member of the Redgrave acting dynasty and wife of actor Liam Neeson, who left a Toronto movie shoot to be at her side in Montreal, the CTV network reported.

Neeson and Richardson have been married since 1994 and have two sons, Micheal Richard Antonio, 13, and Daniel Jack, 12, who were reportedly skiing with her when the accident happened.

Richardson won a Tony Award for playing Sally Bowles in a Broadway production of Cabaret in 1998. She has starred in Nell, The Parent Trap and more than 30 film and television productions.

Maneka Gandhi refuses to comment to his son speech

Maneka Gandhi, mother of Varun Gandhi who has created a furore for his hate campaign against Muslims in Pilibhit, refused to comment on Tuesday on the swirling controversy.

"I don't want to say anything," Mrs. Gandhi, who is five time MP from Pilibhit, told IANS.

The 29-year-old son of Maneka and the late Sanjay Gandhi - younger son of former prime minister Indira Gandhi - was on Sunday issued a notice by the district authorities in Pilibhit, the constituency in Uttar Pradesh so carefully nurtured by his mother who gave up the seat to ensure his easy entry into the Lok Sabha.

Mr. Varun, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, created a storm by adopting a pro-Hindu stance and reportedly threatening to cut off the hands of Muslims who raise a "hand against Hindus".

His speeches, that have been given widely publicity in the media, has led to even the BJP distancing itself from him, with a party spokesman saying the BJP believed in religous harmony and national unity.

The Election Commission directed Uttar Pradesh's chief electoral officer (CEO) to file a criminal case against Gandhi after Congress lodged a protest with the poll panel.

17 killed, 20 hurt in blast at Rawalpindi

At least 10 people were killed and 20 others injured in a suicide attack in the Pakistani garrison city of Rawalpindi on Monday.

The blast occurred in a crowded bus at Pir Wadhai Chowk in Rawalpindi. Witnesses and officials said 10 people, including a woman, were killed in the attack.

The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals by ambulances and the condition of four of them was said to be critical.

The head of the suspected suicide bomber had been found at the site, a TV channel reported.

Many of the victims were hit by the ball bearings that were packed into the bomber's suicide jacket and several vehicles were severely damaged by the blast.

Interior ministry chief Rehman Malik told reporters the suicide bomber could have caused widespread destruction if he had been able to target political workers and leaders who had gathered for a protest organised by lawyers and political parties.

Police officers said the bomber's explosives could have detonated prematurely before he could strike his intended target.

Security personnel cordoned off the area and began scouring the site of the blast for clues.

Malik said law enforcement agencies would remain on alert as intelligence reports had said there could be a "series of suicide attacks" on key buildings and important personalities.

The terrorists had also drawn up plans for target killings, he said.

Lindsay Lohan arrest warrant update: She will not appear in court on Monday

A warrant for Lindsay Lohan's arrest was issued on Friday, but a lawyer for the actress says Lohan will not appear in court on Monday. Her lawyer will appear on her behalf, the Associated Press reports.

Shawn Chapman Holley, Lohan's attorney, told the AP that the warrant was the result of a "misunderstanding." The warrant may have to do with Lohan's drunken driving arrest in 2007, a police spokeswoman told the AP. On Saturday, Beverly Hills Police Lt. Mark Rosen said that the police were not ''actively looking'' for Lohan, though if they came in contact with her, "she's subject to arrest." The star, whose film Labor Pains opens in May, is currently serving three years' probation for the May and July, 2007 incidents, in which she was alleged to have been in possession of cocaine. In 2007, Lohan was sentenced to three-years probabtion. She spent 84 minutes in jail. Her attorney told the AP that Lohan is in compliance with the terms of her probation.

UPDATE: Access Hollywood reported Sunday that an anonymous source said Lohan's arrest warrant stems from a recent trip the actress took, driving herself out of state to Las Vegas, thereby violating the terms of her parole.
