Sonam Kapoor to sizzle in 'Dilli-6'

Anil Kapoor who played quiz master in the Oscar-nominated film 'Slumdog Millionaire' is for actress daughter Sonam the best game onscreen show host ever.

"Slumdog" is loosely based on the format of the famous TV show 'Kaun Banega Crorepati', which had been previously hosted by Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, two giants of Bollywood. "Of course, my dad is the best game show host. I have seen the movie and the performance of dad was excellent", said the actress.

"'Slumdog', which has all the elements of a typical Bollywood masala movie may just win the Oscar for its breathtaking performances and cinematography," said the "Saawariya" actress.

Sonam, who attributes all her success and fame to her father said, "I am Anil Kapoor's daughter. I have got everything I want and I was born with a silver spoon. I am on top of the world now." The actress will be seen in her second film 'Dilli-6' directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra.

"I am lucky that I began my career with a Sanjay Leela Bansali film. Whether it is 'Saawariya' or 'Dilli-6', I am not playing just a glamour object in the film. My characters have substance", she said. She is very confident about her onscreen chemistry with Abhishek Bachchan with whom she is starring in her next film project.

Partial solar eclipse on Jan 26

Sky gazers in some parts of India will get an opportunity to observe a partial solar eclipse Jan 26.

The eclipse, first for the year, will start at 2.15pm on Monday and end by 4pm.

"The eclipse will be visible only from southern parts of India, eastern coast, most of northeast India, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep. People in north and west India will miss the celestial activity," N. Rathnasree, director Nehru Planetarium, said.

The origin of the eclipse will be in south Atlantic Ocean in South Africa where the moon's shadow will first touch the earth, the official said. The eclipse ends when the moon's shadow finally leaves the earth in the South China Sea.

"People can watch the solar eclipse using proper eye gadgets and telescope as it is harmful to view it with naked eyes," Rathnasree said.

The next solar eclipse will occur July 22 this year and will be the century's longest duration total solar eclipse.

"The path of the totality of the eclipse will pass through India and people across the country will be able to observe it," Rathnasree added.

Resul Pookutty is the other Indian at the Oscars

The spotlight may be on A R Rahman, but there is one more Indian who has been nominated for the 81st Annual Academy Awards: Resul Pookutty.

Pookutty has been nominated along with Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke for sound mixing in Slumdog Millionaire.

Pookutty, an FTII graduate, hails from Vilakkupara, Kollam district. He first rose to prominence with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black. He went on to work as sound director for films like Ghajini, Saawariya, Gandhi My Father, Traffic Signal and Matrubhoomi: A Nation Without Women.

Pookutty has also been nominated for the 2009 British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award for best sound in Slumdog Millionaire.

Mandira Bedi gave her co-star a hard slap

For a scene in her forthcoming marathon-based film "42 kms", Mandira Bedi had to slap co-star Gautam Kapur and the actor says it was a "slap to remember".

"I did expect a slap but not with that intensity... it was definitely a slap to remember," said Gautam.

Gautam and Mandira play a married couple in the film and the scene takes place when Mandira finds out her husband had been cheating on her.

Slumdog, Rahman sweep Oscar nominations

Director Danny Boyle’s Golden Globe-winning Slumdog Millionaire – a story based on Mumbai slums – has been nominated in five categories for the Academy Awards to be announced in February 2009.

Slumdog has been nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay (Simon Beaufoy), Best Picture, Best Original Score (A R Rahman), Best Song (One each for Jai Ho and O Saya), Best editing, Best Sound Mixing (Resul Pookutty), Best Sound Editing (Resul Pookutty), Best Cinematography and Best Director (Danny Boyle) at the Oscars.

Slumdog Millionare has already bagged four coveted Golden Globes and multiple Bafta nominations.

The nominations were announced at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Samuel Goldwyn Theatre by Oscar-winning actor Forest Whitaker. The awards will be announced on February 22 at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre.

This is the first time that an Indian has won more than one nomination in Oscar history. Reacting to the nominations, Rahman said: "I did not think it will get there. God has been really kind. And I have to really thank the prayers of all the people and their good wishes.

"Something good is happening and I am really happy about it," he said, adding there is a kind of optimism in the film and so much of positive vibes as you leave the movie hall."

Co-director Loveelyn Tandon said, "We have proved everyone wrong. It's a crazy feeling beyond words. Ten nominations is something unbelievable."

Tried my best with Dutt sisters: Manyata

Amid media speculation on the differences between actor Sanjay Dutt, who plans to contest elections on a Samajwadi Party ticket, and his sister, MP Priya Dutt, who has stressed on the family tradition of loyalty to Congress, many have asked whether Sanjay's actress wife Manyata is responsible for a rift in the family.

In a TV interview, Manyata Dutt said she had worked hard to be accepted as Mrs Dutt, and that she had tried her best to build a good relationship with the "Munnabhai" star's two sisters. "I tried best from my side to put things together, but how much can I bend? I'm human too," she said.

Responding to speculation that she was responsible for the hostility between Sanjay and his sisters, she said, "I'm not someone who will run people down in public. That's not how my parents brought me up."

Asked whether Manyata had influenced his decision to enter politics, Sanjay Dutt, "Nobody can influence my decision. She can only suggest things to me. I want people to just leave her alone."

Manyata added, "He has stood by me. I'm only interested in acknowledgement. I respect him because of the respect he has for his family."

Asked whether she would contest the elections if Sanjay were not able to do so, Manyata said, "He has to take the decision. I take permission from him even if I have to go for coffee or dinner with friends. My priority is my family. He will decide if it is right or not right for me."

On his sister's absence at his rally in Lucknow, Sanjay said, "It did not bother me. But I know she'll be there for me, and I'll be there for her when she wants me. I definitely missed my family, most of all my father. But that's the reality of life, and one has to move on."

The actor recently said that there was only one "Mr and Mrs Dutt" in Pali Hill. When asked to clarify, he said,

"There's nothing wrong in it. All I was trying to say is that it's a tradition to keep your husband's surname. Even Indira Gandhi took her husband's surname."

Dutt, however, added, "Nobody can be Dutt saab (Sunil Dutt). He was larger than life. If I manage to do even one percent of what he has done for humankind, I'll think I have won the battle."

Sanjay Dutt has also reportedly said his late father would have been upset at his joining the Samajwadi Party. But Dutt added, "Amar Singh is like my elder brother, and he was the first one to ask me. I wasn't even sure if I could become an MP. But he convinced me, knowing my background the kind of work I have been doing for society. I was really honoured. So I decided to give it a shot."

Asked why he did not join the Congress, he said, "Amar Singh even said that if Congress wants Sanjay they can take him, but nobody came forward. Now it's too late."

He is still unsure whether he will play the "Gandhigiri" card in his election campaign. He said, "I haven't thought about it as I have not spoken to senior members of my party."

The actor's trip to Lucknow had some awkward moments. For instance, posters with pictures of AK-56 rifles were plastered around the city. He said, "I've clarified earlier that I've been cleared under TADA, and only charged under the Arms Act. But such things will happen, and I'll face them."

Actor Kunal dies of heart attack while on shoot

Popular Bengali film and television actor Kunal Mitra died of a massive heart attack on Wednesday morning while shooting for a serial. He was 44 and is survived by his wife and two sons.

Mitra was in the middle of a shoot for Utsober Ratri, a Bengali serial, at the Indrapuri Studio in south Kolkata when he complained of severe chest pain. He died on his way to the hospital.

“He reported for the morning shoot like any other day, and was getting ready in the make-up room. He was actually in quite a playful mood and was cracking jokes with his co-stars like he usually did,” said Jishu Dasgupta, the director of the serial Mitra was shooting for, and a close associate.

Mitra won spurs as a television actor through serials like Tithir Athithi, Raja Gaja, Ati Uttam. He had a successful film career too. He earned much acclaim for his performance in Tarun Majumdar’s Alo.

A condolence meet was organised at the Technician’s studio in the afternoon where his friends and colleagues paid tributes to him. “He was a versatile actor, but more importantly, he was a lovely human being. He took great care to make everyone comfortable around him,” said actor and producer Arindam Sil, who has produced Mitra’s last film, Shukno Lonka.

“He has young children whose future is yet to be built. We will have to ensure his family has a secure future,” said actor Sabyasachi Chakraborty.

The tragic incident also brings to light the fact that most Kolkata studios don’t have in-house doctors. “Though Mitra’s case was different because it was a heart attack, I shudder to think what would have happened if an accident occurs in one of these studios. With no professional medical practitioner in attendance, things became difficult,” said film and serial director, Arin Paul.

Actor Kaushik Sen claimed these studios don’t even have the most basic facilities. “A doctor in attendance is like a luxury for us. The actors, spot boys and crew members who work here don’t even get proper toilets or drinking water. It’s high time these issues were addressed,” Sen said.

No remake rights of ‘A Wednesday’ to Kamal Haasan

Closer sources of Kamal Haasan had recently stated that the actor would be remaking Hindi film ‘A Wednesday’ wielding megaphone for it. Also buzzes were that it would be Mammooty enacting the role of police commissioner. But now, the problem arises as Producer Kiran Konuru of Tollywood has filed case against UTV Productions.

In his complaint, he has stated that UTV Productions had agreed to give the remake rights of ‘A Wednesday’ in both Tamil and Telugu. But recently, they approached him saying they have given the remake rights in Tamil to Kamal Haasan. Kiran who had earlier delivered an advance amount to the producers was distressed and immediately has filed petition at Hyderabad Civil Rights…

Mani Rathnam ‘Roja’ Movie in 12th Std Book

The National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) have introduced 8 prominent movies in political science textbooks of 12th Std. This is to make the learning process more elated and make students easily grasp the issues related to it.

Garam Hawa, released in 1973 which is based on Partition, has been introduced under the chapter Challenges of nation building. The 1973 box office hit Zanzeer, that portrays the erosion of moral values in the system and how a young police officer is framed under false charges, has been incorporated as a reference material under the chapter Challenges of restoration of the Congress system.

The book prepared by a team of three academics, has also taken Mani Rathnam’s Roja as a reference under the chapter Regional aspirations. The team also selected Haqeeqat (1964), Aakrosh (1980) and acclaimed Marathi film Simhasan (1981) for study.

India(IND) Vs Sri lanka( Sl) 2009 Series 5 ODI’s & T20

A long term agreement between SLC and the IPL is to be signed on the day of the Twenty20 match between the two countries.

“We have agreed to play five ODIs and a Twenty20 match and all pertaining matters in regard to the two governing bodies were solved,” Lokuge said at the SLC headquarters in Colombo. “The SLC has agreed to release its players for the upcoming IPL tournament and we are to come to a long-term agreement concerning the Twenty20 showpiece.

“India and Sri Lanka had a good relationship when it came to cricket. Today we have strengthened that. As a result more tours will take place between the two countries in time to come. We have also come to a conclusion to stand by the BCCI stance with regard to the ICL.

“We’ve also decided to support India at the ICC meetings. The (country’s) president himself has given his blessings and we are happy that things have worked out in a positive way.”

Srinivasan expressed his pleasure at the cordial welcome given by his Sri Lankan counterparts. He also expressed satisfaction at the decision taken by SLC to release its players for the IPL starting in April, and for firmly standing by the BCCI with regard to the ICL issue.

Vedhika Turns Radio Jockey

Vedhika, who has proved her mettle in Tamil with movies like 'Muni', 'Kaalai' and 'Sakkarakatti', is now playing the female lead in 'Malai Malai' opposite Arun Vijay.

The movie produced by Arun Vijay's father-in-law Dr Mohan, is directed by A Venkatesh and features Prakashraj in a prominent role. Manisharma is scoring the music, while A Venkatesh is cranking the camera.

Vedhika is playing a radio jockey in the film. She eagerly awaits her portions to be filmed. To get her act right, Vedhika had reportedly been to meet some of her friends in Mumbai, who are popular Radio Jockeys in Mumbai.

Human rights violation case against Slumdog Millionaire

Thapeshwar Viswakarma of Patna has filed a human rights violation petition against the makers and actors of Slumdog Millionaire in a Patna Judicial Magistrate Court. According to the complainant, the film deals with the lives of the slum people in a degrading manner and it amounts to human right violations.

On hearing the petition, the magistrate ordered Thapeshwar Viswakarma to file all the evidences substantiating his claims and adjourned the case to February 5th, 2009. It is worth mentioning here that A.R. Rahman, who had scored the music for the film and won the Golden Globe award.

Zee TV is all set to launch a historical show titled ‘Jhansi Ki Rani’ very soon.

According to our source, “Jhansi Ki Rani will be one of the biggest shows of Zee TV, produced by Innovative 9. As the title suggests, the story will be based on the life of Rani Laxmibai and her fight for our freedom”.

Dolly Sahi who was earlier seen playing the title role in Star Plus’ Bhabhi has been approached for the role. We talked to the actress who says, “I was on a break after marriage, but now am back to television and am looking for good roles. I have been approached for the role of Rani Laxmibai, but nothing is confirmed as of now”.

Vikas Goopta who recently bid adieu to Balaji Telefilms is the Creative Head of this show. When we called him for info, Vikas said, “Yes, I am working on a project for Innovative 9. But I can’t divulge any info now”.

When called Pawni, EP, Zee TV, she said, “I can’t give you any details on this, you need to contact the channel PR”.

The show will take a prime time slot on Zee TV.

SRK saves lives of Kashmiri orphans

The real life hero Shahrukh Khan turned a reel life hero as he saved the lives two kids who were hit in a grenade attack in Srinagar by providing them free treatment.

SRK got to know about the orphans Mudassar 5 and Amina 3 from Dr Ali Irani of Nanavati hospital, promptly SRK donated Rs 50 laks for the kids ward, which was setup by him in the memory of his mother.

Dr Ali, who treats children that are injured in disasters in J&K knew that the operation for the kids could be made free but there were many other expenses to cater also, “So, I just spoke to Shah Rukh.”

SRK also gave a visit to Mudassar and Amina and promised them a date with his kids once they are hale and hearty.

Zubair a cousin of the kids says, “Amina keeps asking me if I have spoken with Shah Rukh and when is he going to take her to meet his daughter. She also plans to invite SRK’s children Aryan and Suhana to Srinagar so that they can all play on houseboats.”

Their reasons for refusing the film could be anything, but I had no problems whatsoever. I had worked with Priyan-ji earlier [Bhagam Bhag] and the role offered me ample opportunity to exhibit my talent, so why should I let go of this film?," she reasons.

Post ‘Partner’, one expected Lara to go on a signing spree, but she didn't. "I was working the whole of 2008. But there's a lot to look forward to this year, starting with ‘Billu Barber’, ‘Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai’, ‘Do Knot Disturb’ and ‘Blue’. Just watch out," she smiles. Bolly

When asked, Amrita said, "This is just rumor. Harman and I are good friends. I enjoyed working with him as he is very co-operative and talented guy. Coming to this new rumor as I said earlier we are just friend and nothing more than that. I have stopped reacting to such rumors now."

Whatever Amrita speaks in her justification, no one can deny the fact that they are more than good friends as Amrita visited Harman on the sets of What's Your Rashi, Harman also sends flowers to Amrita when both of them are not together and hanging out together after the shoot to a café.

Time will tell whether a new love story is in the making or not.

Saran’s Ajith film begins in March

With only four songs remaining to be shot for Modhi Vilayadu, it looks like director Saran is ready for his forthcoming film Asal with Ajith. In all probability, its shooting will begin in March.

Commenting on the title, Saran said that the screenplay he wrote for this film is completely different from that of Amarkalam or Kadhal Mannan or Attagasam, his previous films with Ajith; it is totally new and original and thus the name Asal (Original). Saran further added that he wrote this screenplay for the matured actor that Ajith is today. Seran also remarked that he has a clear understanding of what people expect from an Ajith film and added that this script will not disappoint them; instead, will take their expectations to a new level and pave the way for a new trend. Seran also revealed that he had reserved the title Asal for Ajith all these years.

Kadhal Mannan (1998), Amarkalam (1999) and Attagasam (2004) were huge hits, making the Ajith-Seran team a household name. Besides these films, Saran has also directed many super hits, including Parthen Rasithen, Gemini, Jay Jay, Vasool Raja MBBS and Vattaram. He holds a respectable position in Kollywood and is popularly referred to as a “minimum guarantee director”, as he has given only one flop so far in a career that is 10 years and 10 films old.

Modhi Vilayadu, which has upcoming stars Vinay and Kajal Aggarwal in the lead, is Saran’s 11th film and has got all the elements to become a stupendous hit. After completing the talkie portion of the film effectively, Saran decided he needed to add attractive songs to the film to further enhance its appeal. Thus, he is engaged in the process of finding exotic locations in Finland, a rarely-seen country in Tamil films. This only testifies his eclectic taste and showmanship. The news is that he will also film a song in Dubai.
