Bad Luck Govind Movie Review

The average common man that was symbolized by Amol Palekar and more recently by the likes of Vinay Pathak and Ranvir Shorey is off lately being exploited formulaically by filmmakers in the name of parallel cinema. Bad Luck Govind is the tale of one such diffident commoner who is confident about only one fact – that he will bring misfortune to anyone in his close proximity (audience inclusive).

Govind Sharma (Gaurav Kapoor) is one such hapless human who invokes disastrous situations wherever he goes. In hope that luck would change, he migrates from Delhi to Mumbai where he stumbles upon a bookie gang headed by Kapoor (Parmeet Sethi). On learning of Govind’s bad luck beguile, Kapoor tries to manipulate it to his merit by spreading his negative vibes on the rival gang.

The two USP of Bad Luck Govind could have been its interesting theme and the protagonist’s common man characterization. Unfortunately the film fails on both fronts. Despite having immense potential, the unique storyline isn’t sketched out into a riveting screenplay but ends up into a one-dimensional gang-war track. A lousy love angle is added and the heroine serves the basic Bollywood purpose of posing as the scapegoat, held hostage by the villain in the climax. And the climax is merely reduced to a gambling game of cards.

Also the director needlessly adds a moral tone to this fantasy film in the climax. After investing 80% of the film in building up bad luck vibrations around Govind and almost convincing the viewer about the ill fortune he emanates, director Varun Khanna suddenly disregards destiny and blames bad luck to plain pessimism. The ethical enlightenment was avoidable.

Coming to the common man characterization, Gaurav Kapoor is actually unlucky to his character. He doesn’t underplay but rather blatantly under-acts his part to unbearable outcome. Every actor from the supporting cast is more tolerable than him. Playing a nobody is no easy job and calls for good talent.

The production values are slapdash though one doesn’t complain much on that front since the slummy setting doesn’t call for much sleekness. However in such shoe-string budget, what was the need to shove a shoddy dream sequence song that serves absolutely no purpose? Most jokes are non-witty while some are awfully lame. The editing is slack and the pacing becomes slow intermittently. The direction clearly lacks finesse.

From others in the cast, Govind Namdeo gets typically theatrical. Vrajesh Hirjee, Ganesh Yadav and Lalit Tiwari are regular. Hrishitaa Bhatt has lost her charm. Zakir Hussain shows some variation from his regular villainous acts with some feminine shades to his character. Parmeet Sethi is the only endurable actor.

One feels sad for Bad Luck Govind essentially because the plot had plenty of potential which wasn’t tapped appropriately. Director Varun Khanna fails to use the bad luck to good effect. Better luck next time!

SRK invited to Golden Globe Awards

Shahrukh Khan has been invited to the prestigious 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards to present the award for the winner of Drama Category Award and Slumdog Millionaire has a strong chance of winning the Golden Globe.

Soundarya Rajinikanth to sign up Hollywood star

Soundarya Rajinikanth’s production house, Ocher Films, has tied up with the Warner Bros to produce South Indian Language films. Though the lady is busy with the animation film Sultan – The Warrior, which features her dad, Superstar Rajinikanth, the production house is also negotiating terms with the Hollywood actress, Jessica Alba to play a role in her forthcoming venture Goa.

The film is based on a real life murder that happened in Goa where a teenager, Scarlett Keelin, was raped and murdered. Jessica Alba has been approached to play the murder victim in the film. Goa will be directed by Venkat Prabhu.

A.R. Rahman launches Nokia (5800 Xpress Music)

Not everyone extend with their magical spells except Rahman. The musical maestro had launched the latest edition of Nokia 5800 Xpress Music on a gracious occasion. A.R. Rahman celebrated his 43rd birthday yesterday and Nokia wanted to launch their latest new edition on the same occasion.

A.R. Rahman unveiled the latest cell phone here at Park Sheraton Hotel in Chennai and a precise demonstration was made. Rahman had also tuned in some melodies for promoting the latest edition titled ‘Connecting People’. Yup! Everyone should’ve been more familiar with the song carrying the themes ‘Free Hugs’.

Two climax for 'Naan Kadavul'

Director Bala's 'Naan Kadavul' is complete and all works are on to ensure the early release of the movie. Starring Arya and Pooja in the lead role, the movie was shot in Kasi, Kanchipuram and Periyakulam. Sources say Bala has shot two endings for the film.

The film is about a father, who for spiritual and astrological amends drives his son away from home. The boy leaves Tamilnadu and takes refuge in Kasi. He (Arya) grows up in the midst of 'Saadhus' and 'Sanyasins' and become one with matted hair and unkempt looks. Meanwhile, realizing his folly, the father goes in search of his son to Varanasi. Shocked to see his son in such a state, he decides to bring his back to his home town. His encounters in Tamilnadu and turn of events after he leaves to Varanasi forms the story.

Sources close to the director reveal that the director has shot two climaxes for the film. The originally planned one has the heroine giving up her life and the male protagonist literally 'eating' her flesh. However amidst doubts whether such an ending would go down well the Tamil audience, Bala has reportedly shot another climax and kept it ready.

Today Indian Idol : Sarojini Naidu (1879 - 1949)

Early Life:

Sarojini Naidu was born in hyderabad on Feb 12, 1879 as the eldest daughter of scientist, philosopher father Aghornath Chattopadhyaya and mother Varasundari who was a Bengali poeters. Her father was a pioners and he established the Nizam's college in 1878.She was bought up in a house of intellectuals, poets and philosophers.She claims that she was bought up in a home of Indians, not Hindus or Brahmins.

Education:

Sarojini passsed her matriculation at the age of 12. Her father wanted her to become a mathematician or a scientist.But she loved poetry from a very early age. At the age of 16, she travelled to england to study first at king's college London. With her father's support she wrote a play called "Maher Muneer" in persian language.

Personal Life:

At the age of 17, she met Dr. Muthyala Govindarajalu Naidu and fell in love with him. He was from Andhra Pradesh. After her studies at the age of 19, she married him. They were married by the Act (1872) in madras, in 1898. They had 4 children: Jayasurya, Padmaja, Randheer and Leelamani. Her daughter padmaja later became Governor of West Bengal.

Contribution in Freedom Struggle:

From 1916, she totally contributed herself to the fight for freedom.She was responsible for awakening the women of India. In 1925 she was elected as the president of the congress, the first Indian woman to hold the post. In July 1919, Sarojini became the Home Rule League's ambassador to England. Sarojini was with Gandhiji during Dandi March. On May 5, Gandhi was arrested Naidu was arrested shortly and was in jail for several months.But she was released due to her poor health.Again she was arrested during "Quit India" protest and stayed in jail for 21 months with Gandhiji. Naidu shared a warm relationship with Mohandas Gandhi even calling him "Mickey Mouse".

On August 15 1947, with the independence of India, she became the Governor of the united provinces, India's first woman governor.

Works:

Sarojini Naidu is also well acclaimed for her contribution to poetry. In 1905, the first volume of her collection of poems was published as " The Golden Threshold". She published two others collections called The Bird of Time, The Broken Wings, later The Magic Tree, The Wizard Mask and A Treasury of Poems.

Death:

On March 2 1949, she took her last breath and India lost her beloved child, "Bulbul:. She died in her office at Lucknow at the age of 70. Her name will be in the golden history of India as an inspiring poet and a Brave freedom fighter. She was truly one of the jewels of the world.Her birthday is celebrated as "Women's Day.

Ramalinga Raju resigns from Satyam board

Satyam Computer Services founder-chairman B Ramalinga Raju has resigned from the IT major's board after admitting a multi-crore fraud in the company’s accounts.

In a notification to the stock exchanges, the Hyderabad-based IT firm said Raju and Managing Director Rama Raju had resigned early Wednesday and that the Securities and Exchanges Board of India (SEBI) had been informed.

In the regulatory statement, Raju said that the company had fraudulently incorporated a non-existent cash component and inflated the bank balance to reflect Rs 5,040 crore (Rs 50.4 billion) as against Rs 5,361 crores (Rs 53.61 billion).

''No board member had any knowledge of the real situation. Accrued interest of Rs 376 crore in books is non-existent. About Rs 1,230 crore was arranged to Satyam, but was not reflected in the books,” he said.

CNBC-TV18 reports that the account manipulation started years ago. "It was like riding a tiger, not knowing how to get off without being eaten," Raju said in his resignation letter to the company’s board of directors, in which he listed major financial wrong-doings over the years to inflate profits.

Yogi B sings for 'Endhiran'

Singer Yogi B who has made his presence felt in the Tamil film industry with some spectacular songs, has been roped in to sing a song for the mammoth production 'Endhiran' that stars superstar Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

A. R. Rahman who is the music director of the film has confirmed to Indiaglitz that Yogi B has indeed sung a song for the film. Moreover, he added that the Malaysian singer was in his studio a while back with regards to Endhiran. A. R. Rahman was working for the Aamir Khan starrer 'Ghajini' at that time. Though Yogi B was there was Endhiran, his services were used for a background score 'Run' that features in 'Ghajini'.

Everything about 'Endhiran' is shrouded with complete secrecy as is the case with every Shankar film. 'Endhiran' produced by Sun Pictures will be ready for release in 2010.

American Idol returns with 8th season on Star world

Star World is set to launch the eighth edition of the popular music reality show American Idol. The show will hit the screens from 15 January and will be aired every Wednesday at 11 pm.

For the new season, Grammy-nominated songwriter Kara DioGuardi will be joining the jury table as the fourth judge. The other three judges will be Simon Cowell, pop singer and choreographer Paula Abdul and record producer and music manager Randy Jackson. Ryan Seacrest will continue as host for the show.

Cowell said, “We are turning the heat up on Idol this year and are thrilled to welcome Kara to the judges’ table. She is smart, sassy lady and one of America's most successful songwriters. We know she will bring a new level of energy and excitement to the show.”

The new edition will see some new changes in the format. The Hollywood stage will change as 36 contestants (previously 24) will now go forward to the semi-final stage. They will be divided into three groups of 12 members each.

Additionally, the latest season will also see the return of the wildcard.

American Idol, which is known for producing global pop sensations like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Taylor Hicks, has seen the format spreading across other nations as well - including Indian Idol.

Bobby Bedi’s Mahaabharat which was to launch on Star Plus by the year end has all of a sudden taken a back seat!!

Telly Buzz gives you the latest developments on the show.
“The shoot of the show has been postponed due to the present economic down turn. The shoot will resume only in February ’09, and the show in all probability will go on air in April ’09”, says our source from the production house.

The star cast for the grand epic has been finalized. Nirmal Pandey will be seen as Bheeshm, Gagan Malik as Krishna, while Lillete Dubey’s sister, Lushin Dubey will portray the role of Kunti. In addition to this, there will be many new faces in the show”, adds our source.

If the buzz is to be believed, Manoje Biddvai will be part of the epic too. “Manoje is roped in for the role of Karan. All the actors were undergoing extensive training in a work shop until now”, states our khabroo.

This is not the first time though, that the shoot of the epic has been halted. For the uninitiated, the proceedings were halted earlier due to heavy rains in the jungles of Morna, near Delhi and this time, the stoppage is due to the downfall in the market.

Easily the most successful Indian musician to go global, A. R. Rahman turns 43 today. Having started his career in tinsel town with Mani Ratnam's 1992 film 'Roja', the talented Rahman has literally taken the world by storm with his magnificent orchestration and apt music.

A major strength of this musical wizard is the art of fusing many styles of music to produce an end result that is so very soothing and energizing with the desired mood…. an incredible ability and yet something that A. R. Rahman does quite naturally. Apart from his millions of Indian fans who shower accolades on him by the hour, Rahman's incredible talent had attracted the attention of the famed TIME Magazine which referred to him as the 'Mozart of Madras'.

Born as A. S. Dileep Kumar in the year 1966 in Chennai, the young lad has always been associated with music, thanks to his family. Losing his father at the tender age of nine, young Dileep's family was involved in renting out musical instruments. In the late 1970s his family converted to Islam and Dilip Kumar became Allah Rakkha Rahman.

Passionate about music all the time, young Rahman worked his way up to the recognition level by composing jingles for commercials, working on the background scores for documentaries and television programs. The big break came his way when Mani Ratnam approached him for the film 'Roja'. A seldom talked about fact is that A. R. Rahman is the recipient of the prestigious Rajat Kamal Award for Best Music Director at the National Film Awards. He received this award on debut. Such an instance was never heard of before.

A musical genius was born. All spotlights were turned on him and scores of Tamil films followed. A. R. Rahman's international recognition for the English film 'Slumdog Millionaire' is simply outstanding. The Los Angeles Film Critics Award, New York Online Film Critics Award, International Press Academy Satellite Award, Black Reel Award and the San Diego Film Critics Award.

A. R. Rahman has been nominated for the Golden Globe Awards for 'Slumdog Millionaire' and also at the Broadcast Film Critics Association Award. Results are awaited….but Rahman is expected to win these as well.

The music wizard has many films up his sleeve and they include 'Asokavanam' (Tamil), 'Puli' (Telugu), 'Sultan: the warrior' and 'Endhiran' (Tamil).

Apart from movies, Rahman is also known for his albums that have gone on to break collection records. 'Vande Mataram', a patriotic album that was composed in the 1997 to commemorate India's fiftieth year of Independence is something every patriotic Indian cherishes close to his or her heart.

Going by the host of recognition this incredible talent is receiving, the Oscars might not be far away. We surely have a genius in our backyard who is sought after internationally. Let's hope A. R. Rahman continues to do what he does masterfully – sway our hearts with his enthralling music.

Mariah Carey rang in the New Year with style - she reportedly scooped a whopping $1 million to perform just four songs at a private gig.

The Hero hit-maker was paid the staggering sum to play an intimate show for the son of Libyan dictator Colonel Gaddafi at a lavish party on New Year's Eve, according to U.K. newspaper The Sun. Carey took time out of her Caribbean holiday with husband Nick Cannon in St. Barts to sing a set of four classic tracks at the island's Nikki Beach Club bash.

Get ready for a mobile video phone that can be worn on the wrist just like a watch, all thanks to a South Korean technology firm that has unveiled the world's first "3G watch phone." The unique phone by LG Electronics boasts a touch-screen dialling system with a camera and an in-built speaker.

With all these features, the users could make video calls and gain high-speed Internet access. The device also recognises voices, transforms text to speech, has a Bluetooth function and also works as an MP3 player.The high-end handset is due to be launched in Europe later next year, reports The Telegraph.

With a 1.43-inch (3.63-centimetre) screen, the product is 0.56 inches (13.9 millimetres) in thickness. The 3G watch phone will go on display at the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas from Jan 8 to 11. The device makes part of a trend towards multi-tasking gadgets that can perform a host of functions.

John Travolta's 16-year-old son dead

Jett Travolta, son of flamboyant Hollywood actor John Travolta was found dead in the bathroom of a resort in the Bahamas. The Travolta family had been vacationing in Bahamas when this unfortunate incident happened. The teenager was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

According to reports, Jett was prone to seizures. One such seizure resulted in his falling down. His head jammed against the bath tub which resulted in his death. However, police have stated that an autopsy would be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Jett was the oldest child of John Travolta and his wife, actress Kelly Preston. The couple also has an eight year old daughter.
